Chennai Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu. It is located on the East Coast facing the Bay of Bengal.

After getting treated in Tamil Nadu, do not fail to visit the famous Navagragha Temples which are found in a close cluster around Kumbakonam in South Tamil Nadu. It was formerly known as Madras. But it was renamed as Chennai in 1997.It was a cluster of coastal villages Triplicane, Mylapore, Tiruvottiyur as well as several other villages on the banks of the Coovam and Adyar Rivers. The transformation of Chennai began in 1939 with the arrival of the British. The East India Company established a settlement here, to the north of the Coovam River. Since the settlement was completed after 15 years on St George's Day on 23^rd April, it was named Fort St George. The area Chennapatnam around the fort attracted some weavers' settlements and was called Black own by the British. The Fort St George was called the White Town or Madraspatnam.Chennai recently entered its 368^th year. The two towns were merged and Triplicane village was acquired by the British in 1676.In 1693 other villages like Egmore, Puraswalkam and Tondiarpet were acquired on long lease and later merged in 1720.In 1746 the French captured the city and it later returned to British Hands.In1756 the French withdrew to Pondicherry In the middle of the 18^th century more villages like Nungambakkam, Ennore, Perambur, Santhome and Mylapore were added to the city. Fort St George became the centre of East India Company and the city became the capital of the Madras Presidency of British India.

It is a great sprawling metropolis, with a population of about 5 million people .It is India's fourth largest city and known for its cultural heritage and is both traditional as well as modern. It is very different from North India in language, food, art forms, music and dance. I t is a great tourist destination and has its share of great temples like the Kapaleeswara temple, (believed to have been built in the 7th century) and Parthasarathy temple. The Santhome Church built by the Portuguese is another very famed place of worship. The other noteworthy places to be visited Vedanthangal, a bird sanctuary very near Chennai and Mahabalipuram, a shore temple about 60 kms from Chennai.

Chennai is emerging as a major hub in medical tourism.The aim of the state Government is to make Chennai a global healing destination. It may be recalled that Chennai was very early in seeing the potential in medical tourism and has never been lacking in multi-speciality hospitals. In fact, Apollo Hospitals, a major corporate hospital-chain opened it first hospital at Chennai. Since then,many more like MIOT Hospitals , Madras Medical Mission, Sankara Nethralya, Sri Ramachandra Hospitals , Vijaya Hospitals , Lifeline Hospitals and many more have entered the fray and are aggressively promoting medical tourism.

Of late there has been a marked increase in patients from Africa,West Asia,and Afghanisthan, and Europe . Indian expats have also been coming back to get complex surgeries or procedures done.

The TTDC has identified  a voluntary non-profit organiasation Meditour India as a nodal agency to promote Medical Tourism in the state.
